Motorola recently announced its contract with fixed-line operator Shanghai Telecom to build an 800 MHz digital mobile radio public safety network for the Shanghai municipal government. "The network, informally speaking, is a network for professional walkie-talkie users, intended for government agencies and large government-owned companies to communicate easily under emergency circumstances," Zheng Jianping, media official of Shanghai Telecom, told Interfax. "The original system used by the government is an analog one while this new network is digital." The network, slated for completion by the end of this year, will cover the whole Shanghai municipality area including Yangshan container port. The interior of certain landmarks and significant transit terminals in Shanghai will also be covered in the first phase of construction. "The network supports voice and data communications between government-owned facilities including police stations, subways and transit terminals. This way, the government can give directions in response to emerging incidents and smooth operation of the city is ensured," Zheng said. The new network is a new generation Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) network based on All-IP technology and can upgrade the current analog users to the digital network upon its completion. The system will also provide services to the 2007 Special Olympics, 2008 Olympic Games Shanghai session and the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. TETRA is an open digital trunked radio standard for professional mobile radio users defined by the European Telecom Standard Institute (ETSI).
